2026 Term 1 Week 6 Issue 52

From the Principal

Samuel Gilbert PS Delivering Excellence in Learning Opportunities for 40 Years

This year, our school proudly marks its 40th anniversary. This is a remarkable milestone celebrating four decades of dedication, growth, and outstanding achievement in education in Castle Hill. Since 1986, the school is committed to fostering a nurturing environment where every student can flourish, innovate, and reach their potential. Over the past 40 years, our school community has grown stronger, enriched by the passion of our outstanding teachers, the enthusiasm of our students, and the untiring support of our families. Together, we have created a vibrant learning culture that inspires curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. As we celebrate this special anniversary, we reflect on our proud history and look forward to an exciting future filled with new opportunities and continued success. Thank you to everyone who has been part of our journey. Your commitment and spirit make our school truly exceptional. In conjunction with the Samuel Gilbert PS staff anniversary committee, school P&C and the students we will be celebrating the milestone throughout 2026.

2026 P&C Day - Purpose in Action

Yesterday, Wednesday 4 March, we celebrated Parents & Citizens’ Association (P&C) Day 2026, with the theme ‘Purpose in Action’. At our school, the P&C is vital in enhancing the educational journey of our students. We sincerely thank all the dedicated parents and community members who generously contribute their time, energy, and resources to support our school community. We truly appreciate the ongoing commitment of our P&C members. Together, we look forward to continuing this wonderful partnership to create the best possible environment for our students to learn and thrive. Thank you, Samuel Gilbert PS P&C, for everything you do!

Kindergarten and Year 6 Buddy Program

An exciting part of being a Year 6 student and a Kindergarten student is our ‘Buddy’ program. Each Kindergarten student is paired with a Year 6 student in the school as their buddy. The program is in place to support the smooth transition of our Kindergarten students when they commence the long journey of formal education. Year 6 students will act as mentors and provide social and emotional support for the children. The buddy program has commenced with the Kindergarten students recently meeting their buddies and getting to know them. Year 6 students will regularly be invited into the Kindergarten classrooms to work closely with their Kindergarten buddy, completing a range of curriculum activities together including arts and crafts, structured play as well as reading and writing activities.

NAPLaN

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLaN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3 & 5. It has been an everyday part of the school calendar since 2008. NAPLaN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. Next week students in Years 3 & 5 will attempt the 2026 NAPLaN sample tests.

Swimming Carnivals

Last week many of our students participated in the school swimming carnival at Waves Pool, Baulkham Hills. Next Monday our school will convene the Zone carnival for 18 schools at the same venue. Congratulations to all students who ‘had a go’ at our carnival especially those who exceeded their own expectation. We wish the students representing the school next Monday the very best. Thank you to Mrs Richards for convening the school carnival. The ability to swim is important for Australian children, especially for those living on or near the coast.

Easter and Ramadan

This month two significant religious celebrations are occurring for many members of our school community. By fostering understanding of, and respect for, diverse religious traditions, we promote social harmony and engender positive interactions between students, staff and community. Easter is a holy time for Christians. Christians celebrate Easter to remember Jesus’ sacrificial love. It is traditionally the day when people exchange Easter gifts of chocolate and share in Easter meals with loved ones. However, Easter events begin before Easter Sunday. Ramadan 2026 is the holiest month for Muslims. It is a time for fasting, prayer and acts of kindness. The month holds significance as the Quran was revealed and promotes spiritual growth and improved relations.

All Parents are Welcome to the Parents & Citizens Meeting

The second 2026 Parent & Citizens (P&C) meeting will be held next Tuesday night at 7.30pm in the school library. Thank you to all parents for being part of this important school community forum. Each meeting is a great opportunity for all families at the school to be part of the significant roles the P&C undertakes.

Road Safety

Students even accompanied by parents are strongly discouraged from walking across Ridgecrop Drive without using the pedestrian crossing. Although it is convenient to cross directly outside the administration building steps it is also potentially dangerous. Transport NSW has recruited a crossing supervisor to commence on Monday 16 March to be placed at the pedestrian crossing for the morning and afternoon bell times.

Parent Teacher Meetings

Thankyou to all parents who made the time to speak to their child’s Year 3-6 teacher during our parent teacher meetings over the last couple of weeks. Teachers enjoyed the opportunity to meet with you and hear from you about your child. We hope these meetings help to establish open lines of communication between you and your child’s teacher for the year ahead.

Kindergarten Parent teacher Meeting

Over the next few weeks teachers are looking forward to having the opportunity to meet with you to discuss your child’s learning needs, goals for the year and any other matters you feel are important to share. We would like as many families as possible to attend the interviews and encourage you to call the office for assistance if you are having difficulty making a booking. All information for making a booking is available on the app.   Go to https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use the code az23n to make your booking.

NAPLaN

The school has been busy preparing for the NAPLAN testing period coming up next week. Laptops have been prepared, Ms Keane and class teachers have worked with students to   prepare them for the way the tests are presented and we are set to go! Parents can help by ensuring students have a reliable set of headphones (not fluffy ones!) and that they are at school on time and each day of the testing.

Children should be reassured that the tests are just one snapshot of their progress and certainly nothing to feel anxious about. It is better if they can complete all tests with their class mates rather than as a catch up test at a later time.

Year 3 are intending to complete Writing on Wednesday, Reading on Thursday, Language Conventions on Friday and Numeracy on Monday.

Year 5 will follow the same order but will complete all tests within the three days, doing both Reading and Language conventions on Thursday.

Transition to High School - Moving into Year 7

Expressions of interest (EOI) are now open to parents of Year 6 students for high school placement in 2027.

Use the below link or the Enrolment tab on the school web page to complete your online EOI using the Moving to high school link to guide you through the process.

All Year 6 students need to have an application entered even if they are not seeking an enrolment in a government school and a placement is not required (PNR).

Submissions close on Friday 27 March but it would be helpful to complete prior to this date in case a problem is encountered.

Don’t hesitate to call the office, speak to your class teacher, Mrs Khakh or myself if you have any difficulties with this process.

School Photos

On Monday 30 March school class photos will be taken. Families have the option of ordering online or using the envelope sent home with your child this week. These can be used to pay by card or cash and returned with your child on photo day.

A permission note will be sent via School Bytes to ensure your child is able to be included in the class photo.

Sibling photos will be taken from 8:00am in the new hall. These are available free of charge to families who purchase two or more packs ( Blue, Green or Red). Please note these are for children enrolled at Samuel Gilbert PS, not for younger siblings.

Band photos will be taken on this day.

It is important that children wear full school uniform with black shoes and appropriate socks.

Assemblies

Assemblies are held fortnightly on Friday afternoons at 2:00pm.

We will hold a whole school assembly once a term.

Years K-2 will hold their assemblies in the odd weeks and Years 3-6 in the even weeks. Parents will be notified if their child will be receiving a star badge.

This term the SRC Badge Presentation will take place on Thursday 2 April in Week 10.

PAX GBG

Information will be sent home separate to this school newsletter on our K-2 and 3-6 Wellbeing programs, adjusted for 2026.

Our K-2 wellbeing program is an adapted form of the PAX Good Behaviour Game system. This program is not a curriculum. It involves concrete experiences and time for observation and reflection. PAX strategies, called Kernels, are explicitly taught to students and used throughout the school day.

We will provide information to parents on the PAX kernels, through the school newsletter as they are taught.  This week’s kernel is the PAX vision. With the PAX vision, teachers help students create a how-to map to create more Peace (PAX) in the classroom. These maps are based on what students would  liked to SEE, HEAR, FEEL and DO. Because these visions are created collaboratively the students have more of a vested interest in ‘keeping the peace’ in the classrooms. You may have seen your child’s PAX vision in their classroom at your Meet the Teacher afternoon.

Year 2 Swimming Scheme

As a component of the Year 2 Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) learning area, Year 2 will be attending the Department of Education Swim Scheme program. In 2026 our Year 2 teaching and learning team have organised Swimming Scheme earlier in the year to allow for maximised, uninterrupted learning throughout the remainder of 2026.The Department of Education School Swimming and Water Safety Program is an intensive learn to swim program, which assesses and develops water confidence and provides students with skills in water safety and survival. The program is conducted over 5 days. Each daily lesson is 90 minutes. Students who have not reached a satisfactory standard of water safety and survival skills and are unable to swim 25m confidently unaided with correct technique in deep water, are eligible to participate in the School Swimming and Water Safety Program. Students who enter the program with stronger swimming skills are identified and given opportunity to practice and extend skills.

All of Year 2 will be participating between March 16-March 20 or March 23 – March 27

Information has been sent home through SchoolBytes.

If you have any questions or concerns about swim scheme please contact Ms Appave.

Harmony Day

Harmony Week in Australia will be celebrated from Monday, 16 March to Sunday, 22 March 2026, with the theme “Everyone Belongs.” The week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity and promotes respect, inclusion and a sense of belonging for all.

Throughout the week, students will participate in a range of classroom activities that explore different cultures, traditions and perspectives, helping them develop an appreciation of the diversity within our community.

Our school will also mark Harmony Week with several special events:

  • Monday 16 March – Our school leaders will launch Harmony Week by sharing messages about respect, kindness and inclusion with students across the school.
  • Wednesday 18 March – Students are invited to wear orange, the official colour of Harmony Week, or dress in cultural clothing that represents their heritage.
  • Friday 20 March – The canteen will offer a special Harmony Week lunch order to celebrate the occasion. Further information and ordering details will be sent home in advance.

We look forward to celebrating Harmony Week together as a school community.

School Swimming Carnival

Last week we held our school swimming carnival at Waves pool. Congratulations to all students who participated in events and thanks to the parents who supported the running of the carnival by volunteering as time keepers. Particular thanks to Susan Lin for not only acting as our starter on the day but for recruiting the help of her swim club team to assist with timing, recording and refereeing. Your help was greatly appreciated.

Despite running out of time to hold our novelty races all students had the opportunity have a cool down in the SplashPad which was greatly enjoyed by everyone.

Thank you to Mrs Richards for coordinating the day.

We look forward to hosting the Zone Carnival at Waves Pool on Monday and wish our 22 representative swimmers the very best of luck.

Please see attached the students representing SGPS.

Congratulations

We would like to acknowledge Minuli and Sonesh E. who throughout Term 4 2025 and the school holidays volunteered with Kids Giving Back to prepare meals and care packs for others experiencing hardship. Their actions so clearly reflect our school values of empathy, kindness, leadership and social responsibility. Attached to this newsletter is a flyer form this program for others who may like to be involved. Well done Minuli and Sonesh, we are proud of you.

Numeracy and Literacy

Reading with your child at home

Reading is one of the most important skills your child will ever learn. Children quickly understand the value of reading and writing when they see family members using these skills every day — whether it’s reading for pleasure, following a recipe, writing a shopping list, or reading road signs.

When you support reading at home, you are helping your child succeed in all areas of learning at school.

How You Can Support Reading at Home

  • Be yourself. Talk with your child about everyday things and include them in conversations.
  • Read aloud every day. This helps children learn the language of books and builds a love of reading.
  • Make reading enjoyable. Share stories, laugh together, and talk about what you’ve read.
  • Create a reading routine. Choose a quiet time without distractions (try to keep TV off during reading time).
  • Listen to your child read daily, even if it’s only for a few minutes.
  • Offer a variety of reading materials at home — storybooks, fact books, comics, magazines, poems, and more.
  • Give books as gifts or treats.
  • Visit your local library and borrow books for the whole family.

If English is not your first language, it is very important to read to your child in your home language. Strong skills in your first language help children learn to read in English.

Tips for Listening to Your Child Read

Before Reading

  • Look at the cover and title together.
  • Talk about the pictures.
  • Ask what they think the story might be about.

During Reading

  • Pause and talk about what has happened so far.
  • Ask what they think might happen next.

After Reading

  • Ask questions about the story and pictures.
  • Talk about favourite parts.

If the book is challenging, take turns reading. Beginning readers can read repeated phrases, while adults read longer sections.

Always praise your child for trying — even when mistakes happen.

Everyday Ways to Build Reading Skills

Reading doesn’t only happen with storybooks! Try these simple activities:

  • Tell and re-tell stories (family stories, fairy tales, favourite movies).
  • Play word games like “I spy.”
  • Read recipes together while cooking.
  • Read TV guides, shop signs, or leaflets.
  • Play board games and read the rules together.
  • Do word puzzles or crosswords.
  • Read and write notes or letters to family members.
  • Provide crayons, pencils, paper, and letter magnets for writing practice.

 Remember…

  • Talk about the meaning of stories and new words.
  • Encourage your child to read anytime, anywhere.
  • Let your child see you enjoying reading.

Above all — make reading fun! When children enjoy reading, they are more likely to become confident, lifelong readers.

Happy reading!

4H & 4P

In Geography lessons, 4H & 4P students have been exploring how different places are arranged to serve various purposes. We are learning about protecting and caring for special natural areas in New South Wales and discovering ways to reduce waste. We are also investigating sustainable food practices used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, helping us understand the importance of looking after our environment for the future.

To reduce waste in our school environment, 4H & 4P have started recycling their Glee cans, milk bottles, and poppers used at lunch through the ‘Return and Earn’ program. We saved over 60 bottles from going into landfill in just one week!

A Word from the Library

Word from the Library

As we pass the halfway mark I would like to share some library facts with you;

  • The library collection currently has 21 909 items.
  • 53% if fiction and 47% is non-fiction.
  • So far in this year, 2 496 items have been borrowed.
  • The Thursday Morning Read has been very well attended with an average of 20-30 students, parents and siblings attending each week.

I would like to remind everyone of the borrowing organisation. All students are permitted to borrow up to 4 books at a time; however they must use a book bag to carry and protect their books, this bag may be the excursion bag available from the uniform shop, a canvas shopping bag or any other suitable bag, the only requirement is the books must fit inside the bag. Kindergarten is a special situation and are only borrow a single book in Term 1, two in Term 2, etc. until they have shown the responsibility to borrow 4 books at a time. If you have any concerns about lost, damaged or overdue books, please come and see me in the library before or after school to discuss what actions (if any) are needed to satisfy your concerns.

Thursday Morning Read

The Thursday Morning Read is on every week, Thursday Morning at 8:20 am in the tiered Learning Space in the Library. All are welcome, students, siblings, parents, and grandparents, come along and listen to some fun stories before school. We will be reading some fun and entertaining books as well as some other books celebrating the many different cultural events that occur throughout the year. I look forward to seeing lots of you on Thursday morning.

Treasure Hunt

Our first Treasure Hunt of 2026 has begun! How good are you at unscrambling the names of famous children’s authors? Read the clue, search the library for biography posters and unscramble the authors’ names. Give your completed sheet to the teacher on duty in the library and collect your 3D-Printed prize (one prize per student per term). Try a practice one here:

A very well-known author, who has had many of her books turned into short movies. Creator of Super-Worm, Stickman, Zog and Highway Rat.

Author of Note: Graeme Base

Graeme Rowland Base (born 6 April 1958) is a British-Australian author and artist of picture books. He is perhaps best known for his second book, Animalia published in 1986, and third book The Eleventh Hour which was released in 1989.

He was born in Amersham, England and moved to Australia with his family at the age of eight. He has lived there ever since. He attended Box Hill High School and Melbourne High School in Melbourne and then studied a Diploma of Art (Graphic Design) for three years at Swinburne University of Technology at Prahran. He worked in advertising for two years and then began illustrating children's books, gradually moving to authoring them as well. His first book, My Grandma lived in Gooligulch, was accepted by the first publisher he sent it to.

The Eleventh Hour: A Curious Mystery is an illustrated children's book by Graeme Base. In it, Horace the Elephant holds a party for his eleventh birthday, to which he invites his ten best friends (various animals) to play eleven games and share in a feast that he has prepared. However, at the time they are to eat—11:00—they are startled to find that someone has already eaten all the food. They accuse each other until, finally, they're left puzzled as to who could have eaten it all. It is left up to the reader to solve the mystery, through careful analysis of the pictures on each page and the words in the story.

The Eleventh Hour: A Curious Mystery (1989) was re-released in 1993 with a new, special sealed section in the back called "The Inside Story". Labelled "TOP SECRET", it carries the paragraph: Within lies the solution to the Curious Mystery of The Eleventh Hour, as well as detailed explanations of all the clues and puzzles in the illustrations. Do not turn this page until you have tried your hardest to unravel the Mystery – for the getting of wisdom is no match for the thrill of the chase, and those who choose the longer road shall reap their reward! — Graeme Base
