Term 4 Week 4

4th November 2024

Message from the Principal

Kindergarten Transition

I look forward to welcoming our new students and families to Russell Vale Public School beginning next week. Our formalised transition program kicks off Thursday 7th  November with our parent information session from 9:20am in the hall. Details of the dates to follow have been distributed to families. If you know of any families who have not enrolled yet, please encourage them to contact the office.

Selective High School and Opportunity Class Applications 2026

Selective High School and Opportunity Class applications are open from 7th November 2024 to 21st February 2025.

Selective High School Year 7 entry in 2026: Apply when your child is at the end of Year 5 or the beginning of Year 6.

Opportunity Class Year 5 entry in 2026: Apply when your child is at the end of Year 3 or at the beginning of Year 4.

Selective high schools and opportunity classes are two of the ways the NSW Department of Education supports high potential and gifted students.

What are their benefits?

  • Students learn alongside, and form friendships with, other high potential and gifted classmates.
  • Special teaching methods allow students to learn at a quicker pace and in more detail.
  • Research shows that students benefit both academically and socially when learning with classmates who have similar abilities.

Selective high schools and opportunity classes are not zoned so you can apply to ones outside your local enrolment area.

Complete the online application. Applications close on 21st February 2025.

Once your application has been submitted and processed, your child will need to sit a computer-based placement test. Learn more about it at Application process.

Apply online at shsoc.education.nsw.gov.au - for further information, visit Selective high schools and opportunity classes.

Symbio Wildlife Park Excursion

Thursday 7th November our Stage 1 students head to Symbio Wildlife Park for the chance to interact with a variety of animals and environments. Experienced Rangers will take students on an educational tour through the park, where they will be able to observe both native and exotic animals and the habitats in which they live, such as wetlands, water lagoons, bushland, desert, rainforest and beaches which is incorporated in our Geography topic of Features of Places.

Remembrance Day

Our Remembrance Day Ceremony will take place Monday 11th November at approximately 10:40am. All community members are invited to join us.

School Disco

Information has been distributed regarding our School Disco that will take place Friday 8th November in the school hall. Thank you in advance to all parents who are assisting by helping to organise this upcoming event. Tickets can be purchased at: https://events.humanitix.com/copy-of-rvps-p-and-c-school-disco.

2025 Captain Speeches

Best of luck to our Year 5 students who will be delivering their speeches on Tuesday 5th  November in hopes of becoming a Captain, Vice-Captain or Prefect. Parents, carers and family members are welcome to attend. This will take place from 12:00pm in the hall.

Community of Schools Band Program

The Woonona Community of Schools Band Program has been running successfully since 2012 and this year there are 25 students from several local primary schools participating. Each Wednesday morning from 8:00-9:15am, primary students come to Woonona High School to learn an instrument and rehearse as a band. Our current and ex music students and outside tutors provide small group tuition on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, keyboard or drums. The program is open to Year 5 and 6 students (younger students may apply if they already play an instrument). If you interested or have questions, you may send an e-mail to  rhiannon.sharp@det.nsw.edu.au

New applications are open and you can register your interest here.

Music Tuition Program

Woonona High School also runs a tuition program for instrumental and vocal lessons before and after school in the Music Rooms. They currently offer vocal, guitar, bass, drums, piano/keyboard, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone lessons to WHS and local primary school students for $20-$25 per half hour. All of our experienced tutors have Working with Children Checks.

The Role of the Russell Vale Public School Parents and Citizens Association

The Russell Vale Public School Parents and Citizens Association are a dedicated group of parents and community members who meet throughout each school term to discuss and plan how to best support Russell Vale Public School to promote the interests of the school. We aim to bring parents, citizens, students and teaching staff into close co-operation, assist in providing facilities and equipment for the school and promote the recreation and welfare of all students at Russell Vale Public School. A regular overview will feature in each school newsletter to provide the school community with details of how the P&C is supporting Russell Vale Public School as well as details of how you can become involved in the P&C.

Russell Vale Public School 70th Anniversary Fete

The P&C wish to extend a very heartfelt thank you to everyone that enabled the Fete to be such a huge success. The Fete provided an excellent opportunity for past and present community members to come together and celebrate 70 years of Russell Vale Public School. Approximately $7500 was raised and these funds have been allocated to a very special project.

Farm Shed

The P&C have been working closely with Mrs Cleall to provide funding for a new, state of the art farm shed. The money raised during the Fete has been used to pay for the works which have begun at the farm. It was important to the P&C and Mrs Cleall for these funds to be spent now to allow all those who contributed to raising money at the Fete to see the commencement of the farm project. The P&C are committed to providing further funds to enable the completion of the shed. Construction work and plumbing will begin in the January school holidays ready for unveiling in Term 1, 2025.

School Disco

The P&C are very excited to be organising the 2024 School Disco on Friday 8th November. We hope you have your tickets and dance moves ready! There will be hot food availave via pre-order through the Flexi-Schools app as well as a selection of super cool snacks, drinks and tattoos. In order to make the RVPS Disco a night to remember for our students, please sign up as a volunteer on one of the stalls.

How Can You Support the Russell Vale Public School P&C?

The strength of the P&C and the positive contribution we can make towards supporting our children and their education lies with its members. Many local P&C Associations are challenged by decreasing members. We welcome all new members and attendees to P&C meetings and as volunteers at P&C organised events. Coming along to a P&C meeting is easy! Meetings are held on Monday nights of Weeks 3 and 8 at 7pm at the Woonona/Bulli RSL. We would love to hear suggestions from our school community about how the P&C can continue to work in partnership with our school to achieve the best possible outcomes for students and stakeholders in the school community.

Please contact the Russell Vale Public School Secretary to find out about joining the P&C today secretary@rvpspnc.onmicrosoft.com
