Swimming Carnival

Congratulations to Will in Year 3 for earning a place at the State Swimming carnival!!!  An amazing effort that comes from a lot of practice and hard work.

Pokemon cards

We have had quite a few students bringing Pokemon cards to school. While students play with these positively, this is not a problem. However, please remind your child that they are responsible for these cards. It is challenging to investigate any issues students have with swapping or losing Pokemon cards and I do not want any minor issues to result in arguments between children. If issues do occur, we may need to ban these cards coming to school.

If you are concerned about your child losing or swapping their Pokemon cards, please do not allow them to bring them to school.

Allergies and Health Care

A number of students at Burwood Public School have severe allergies resulting in a condition known as anaphylaxis. Please note that, while the school can never be considered a nut-free zone and nut products are not banned in the school, we do ask for parents’ co-operation in providing alternative food products for their children. For some affected children even the slightest contact with nuts or nut products or other allergic foods can result in a life-threatening reaction. We also ask that you discuss with your children the importance of always washing hands before and after eating and not sharing their food with others. We prefer that parents do not send food for students birthdays, due to the concern about food allergens. Students can be allergic to any number of things, including fruit, eggs and man-made products.

If your child has anaphylaxis it is a mandatory requirement for all schools to meet with the family to prepare a medical action plan. Please ring the school for an immediate appointment if this applies to one of your children. All student health concerns should be reported to the school with paperwork from your doctor. Please note that we can only administer prescribed medications.

Issues or concerns

We highly value feedback and communication from parents and carers. We understand that you may have concerns or complaints about an issue. The Department of Education has a complaints process that we follow.

Always contact the school first to talk about your concerns. We can solve most problems. It's best if you let someone know about your concerns as early as possible. Make a time to meet with a staff member or contact the school and ask for an appointment. If you are unsure who to speak to, the school’s office staff may be able to help find the best person.

If you have raised your concerns with your child’s teacher and are dissatisfied, you can escalate your complaint to the principal. The principal can decide to manage the complaint or hand it to another suitable person, like another member of the school executive.

If your concern is about a principal, you can make a complaint to one of our local Department of Education offices. The school can provide you with their contact details.

You can also use the department’s online complaint form or the Feedback Assist widget on the right-hand side of this page to make a complaint, give feedback or tell us about an idea. We will find the right place to respond to your complaint or feedback.

Zone Swimming Carnival

In the past week, a stellar group of 19 students from Years 3-6 proudly showcased our school's swimming prowess at the Inner West PSSA Zone Swimming Carnival held at the Ashfield Aquatic Centre. These young athletes faced formidable opponents in a range of events, demonstrating outstanding sportsmanship throughout.

Each of our students exhibited determination and resilience, swimming their hearts out and achieving personal best results in various competitions. Their dedication to both individual and team efforts was truly commendable. To all our students who participated in the carnival, a heartfelt congratulations—we are immensely proud of your achievements.

A special acknowledgment goes to the invaluable support provided by Ms Sweeting, Ms Tarran, and Miss Kanaan.

Regional Swimming Congratulations Will!

This week our Super Swimmer Will from Year 3 represented Burwood PS and the Inner West PSSA at the regional swimming carnival. Will had an exceptional afternoon in the pool.  he is the fastest junior swimmer in the entire Sydney East region! His results were:

Junior Breaststroke - 1st

Junior Backstroke - 1st

This is a wonderful achievement for Will! He will now go on to represent Burwood PS and the Sydney East region at the State Swimming carnival at the end of Term 1.

West Tigers

On Wednesday 6th of March, our school welcomed esteemed guests from the West Tigers, including stars Isaiah Papali'i, Solomon Alaimalo, and Kezie Apps. Students from Years 3 to 6 were privileged to have this unique opportunity to interact with these accomplished athletes, exploring essential social and emotional skills aimed at helping them be the best versions of themselves.

During the engaging session, our inquisitive students posed thought-provoking questions to the West Tigers stars, delving into their personal experiences and seeking advice. Remarkably, the athletes not only fielded these hard-hitting questions with grace but also shared insightful anecdotes, leaving a lasting impact on our students. The emphasis on "Simply Your Best" inspired motivation and determination, providing our students with valuable knowledge for their ongoing journey to excel every day.

Stage 3 Science

This term, Stage 3 students are delving into the fundamental concepts of chemistry in their Science lessons. In the previous week, Year 5 enjoyed a captivating experiment exploring the properties of gases. During this experiment, students noticed that the tissue inside a cup, when submerged in water, remained dry. They reasoned that this occurred because air occupies space, and when the glass was submerged, the air couldn't escape, preventing water from entering and keeping the tissue dry. The students in Stage 3 are eagerly anticipating further discoveries in science and engaging in more exciting experiments.

Stage 2 Science Incursion

On Monday 4 March, Year 3 and 4 participated in a Science incursion with educator, Sean. He spoke to us about Space, Earth, Moon and the Sun. He also showed us that extraordinary things can happen, like how heat and light from the sun can actually harm our body and make things move. He even showed us a balloon experiment to explain what happens when you go in space without a spacesuit. We then got to do a lot of different experiments to play with light, heat, air and liquids. Finally, he showed us a vinegar experiment where we had a cup and he put vinegar and bicarb soda into a container on the table. It burst open and covered some students with vinegar!

Clean Up Australia Day

On Thursday 7 March, all students participated in Clean Up Australia Day. Each stage was allocated a different area of the school to clean. Stage 2 was responsible for picking up rubbish around the hall and the classrooms nearby.

There was a huge amount of rubbish!

The most common pieces of rubbish were ice block wrappers and aluminum foil. It is a good idea to limit your rubbish so we can look after our school environment. You can do this by using lunch boxes and leaving your rubbish at home. Otherwise make sure to place your rubbish in the bin immediately, before the wind or our playground ‘friends’ get to it.

Student Representative Council 2024

The SRC held their first meeting this week with numerous items already on the agenda. Students were eager to develop their leadership and communication skills with many volunteering to take on organisational roles. This included running SRC meetings with Ms Li and Mrs Richardson, and organising our first event for the year, Harmony Week.

This is an insight into our meetings and points discussed this week:

Harmony Day Poster Competition

The SRC encourages students to wear orange or cultural clothes on Wednesday 20 March. We also welcome family and friends of the school community to enjoy a musical performance, led by Ms Wijngaarden, outside the music room from 8:45 am.

The SRC created a short video introducing a few SRC members and teachers, their cultural backgrounds and something special about them. Students will view this video during Harmony Week and discuss with their class what is special about their cultural background.

In addition, the SRC is running a poster competition which is open to all students in the school. Please see below for more details or speak with Ms Li or Mrs Richardson.

Kindergarten

What does mathematics look like across the school?

Using the new mathematics syllabus, K-6 students focus on the big ideas of mathematics.

In Stage 1, students have been focusing on the big idea: What needs to be measured determines the unit of measurement. To support this learning at home, you may wish to:

· regularly measure your child’s height vertically on a wall

· use both formal and informal units to compare the results. For example, stacking and counting plastic connector blocks, using a ruler to measure in centimetres and using a tape measure to measure in metres and centimetres.

Talking about the learning we do at school and using practical or real world ways to understand it at home, helps students develop the concepts and big ideas of mathematics.
