Newsletter Term 3 Week 7 2024
Principal's Message
Happy Spring! After the almost cyclonic winds last week, it has been fantastic to have a week of gorgeous weather. We were fortunate to not have any issues from the extremely strong winds. The students have been excellent in remembering to wear their hats while on the playground over the last couple of weeks. As it gets hotter, they will be reminded that if they are not wearing a hat they will be asked to move under the covered areas of the playground.
Public Speaking
I would like to congratulate all the students on presenting a speech to their class. It is a very daunting task, standing in front of your peers and speaking. I was fortunate enough to be one of the adjudicators for both the Stage 2 & 3 public speaking finals. Every student that took part did an amazing job. The topics of all the prepared speeches were interesting for both students and staff and after the prepared speeches, there wasn’t much between any of the finalists. The impromptus were tough, and all the students did their best with two very difficult topics. I would like to congratulate all four stage winners who will be representing Taren Point at the Zone Public Speaking Competition in Week 2 next term.
The winners were:
Kindergarten: Idris – Why the kindergarten class should have a guinea pig
Stage 1: Sienna-Mae - Exercise
Stage 2: Elizabeth – Why we shouldn’t kill bees
Stage 3: Zara – Being outspoken is important
Sydney East Representatives
We have had two of our senior students represent the Sydney East Region at the NSW Softball and NSW Football (soccer) championships. Congratulations to Yvette in Year 5 for being selected in the Sydney East Softball team. Mr Sexty, Mrs Harris and all of 5/6S went to Woolooware to watch Yvette’s last game of the championship. It was a tightly fought 1 run win.
The week before, Lukas from Year 6, represented Sydney East at the NSW Football Championships. Unfortunately, 5/6 were unable to make it to Tamworth to watch Lukas play but they enjoyed being able to see some of the games on the live stream. Lukas’s Sydney East team were crowned joint champions.
Congratulations again to both Yvette and Lukas.
Road Safety and Wheels Day
Yesterday, all classes participated in a road safety workshop which was run by the NRMA. This workshop will lead in well to next week’s Wheels Day. On Wednesday 11 September, students are encouraged to bring either a bike or scooter to school as they will be learning more about safe riding, road safety and safety equipment for riding bikes and scooters.
The following day, the Police Youth Engagement Officer will visit the school and speak to the students about bike and road safety.
It has been great to see the number of students riding their bikes to school increasing. We have been reminding students that they need to dismount from their bikes and walk them into school and across the playground. In the afternoon they are asked to walk their bikes from the racks to the gates and then they can ride them. Anyone riding either a bike or a scooter needs to have a helmet that fits correctly and is secured properly.
Parenting Program
I have been contacted by the Principal of Como West Public School to pass on the invitation to all of our families about a series of Parenting Workshops that they are running in September and October. The program is called Stepping Stones Triple P Seminar Series. Please see the Community Notice section for details. If you have any questions about the seminars, please contact me for more information.
Canteen
Families are reminded to register for Flexischools to be able to place lunch orders for their child. The new provider, Educatering is based at Endeavour High School. Canteen starts this Wednesday 11 September. It is important we support canteen to ensure its viability as an ongoing service. Thank you to all the families who do.
Centenary
We turn 100 next year. Planning for the Centenary Celebrations are well underway. We are looking to capture all alumni, both students and staff and encourage you to share our Facebook past with the QR Code link to a Google form questionnaire. If you know someone that attended TPPS, can you please direct them to the School’s Facebook page or share the post with them. If you would like to be part of the organising committee, please contact either Shenee Wyld or Mrs McLean.
Stage 3 Camp
Our Stage 3 students went to Bathurst last week as part of their HSIE studies. The overnight excursion allowed the students to experience firsthand, what life was like in the 18oo’s during the goldrush period. I don’t think anyone struck their fortune, but I believe that they all had a great time. I would like to thank Mrs Harris and Mr Sexty for giving up their family time to attend camp with the students.
Upcoming Events
Additional school Photos
Next Tuesday our student leadership team and Dance groups will have their photos taken because these were unable to be taken when the other school photos were taken. All dancers are asked to bring their dance costume in for the photos.
RU OK Day
Next Thursday 12 September the school will be doing activities for RU OK Day. The mental health and wellbeing of everyone is so important and a simple conversation with someone can make such a difference.
Stage 2 Camp
Our Stage 2 students will be heading to Taronga Zoo on Tuesday of Week 9, 17 September, with students from Como PS for an overnight Zoo Snooz experience. Thank you to Mrs Ward and Mr Yock for going with the students. I look forward to hearing all about the experience.
End of Year Presentation Concert
We have booked the Sylvania High School Hall for our end of year Presentation Assembly and Concert for Tuesday 3 December.
As always, if there is anything that you would like to discuss about school, please don’t hesitate to contact me at school or via email.
Have a great weekend
