Parent Information Session on Reading
Year 2 Swimming School
Notes have gone out through School Bytes for the Year 2 Swimming School. Swimming School will take place in the last 2 weeks of this term (16 - 27 September). The program is subsidised by the Department of Education who provide the swim school teachers.
REAL Schools Session
Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended our parent information session on REAL Schools. It was absolutely fabulous to have so many parents (over 80) attend! Feedback from the parents was overwhelmingly very positive.
REAL Schools is an excellent initiative that will be implemented over the next 3 years to support teachers to develop our students' resilience, self-regulation and social-emotional strategies. Information on the Department of Education support of Restorative Practices can be found at Restorative practices (nsw.gov.au). Please look in the newsletter for frequent information on REAL Schools and restorative learning strategies. The PDF of the powerpoint presented by Marion Walsh-Gray can be found at https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dG1DBWkSHOCz8Ll7jv7_4TKUHgnMzr-C/view?usp=sharing
Celebrating our teacher expertise
Ms Birchley and Ms Sweeting were invited to present at the State Office 2024 English as a Second Language/Dialect (EAL/D) Conference this week to showcase our school's ongoing work focusing on assessment practices and EAL/D learners. This included sharing our approach to building strong EAL/D pedagogy and practices across the school, the purpose of formative and summative assessments, knowing and understanding syllabus outcomes and expectations, developing protocols that assist in the design of effective assessment tasks and modifications to reporting processes.
Umbrellas
We have had some issues with students using umbrellas dangerously. We ask parents and carers not to send umbrellas to school with students. If they need an umbrella walking to school or home with you, please take it with you when you leave, alternatively they can wear a raincoat. If students use umbrellas unsafely at school, they will be confiscated.
Scooters and bikes on school grounds
If your child comes to school with you on a scooter, please ensure that they walk their scooter or bike on school grounds. This is a safety issue. We have a bike rack near the Hornsey St entrance where students are able to leave their scooter or bike for the day if needed.

Kate at the PSSA Netball Championships
The Primary Netball Championships, organised by the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association, were held this week from Monday, 12th August to Wednesday, 14th August at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre.
Our very own Kate from Year 6 was in attendance, representing Sydney East, and was phenomenal in the Goal Attack and Goal Shooter positions. She was previously scouted for the team at the Regional PSSA Carnival.
After 3 days of intense netball competition, Kate and the Sydney East team came second and went home with fantastic silver medals.
We are so proud of you, Kate!!!
PSSA Netball
The Senior A and Senior B netball teams have both had phenomenal seasons in PSSA this year. Both teams have made it into the GRAND FINALS, which are being played today (23/08/24).
Both teams dominated the rounds and did not lose a single match all season, finishing at the top of the leaderboard. Last week, they played the semi-finals and came away with convincing wins against Enfield and Croydon Park.
The Senior A team will now face Haberfield in the grand final, beginning at 12:15pm. The Senior B team will face Abbotsford at 1:00pm. Wish us luck!
Burwood has never had a grand final win in PSSA netball before. Last year, the Senior B team made it as far as the grand finals but ultimately lost the match by one point!
We are hoping this could be the year we take home the victory, possibly in BOTH A and B divisions! What a wonderful end to a fabulous season of Winter PSSA.
Education Week
Last week, Burwood Public School welcomed parents and carers to celebrate Education Week. We began with an information session about Real Schools, followed by open classroom visits where students engaged in literacy learning. Afterwards, parents and carers were invited to stay and enjoy a picnic lunch in the playground as we celebrated this year’s theme “Proud to Belong”.
Our community makes Burwood PS a wonderful place to be!

Book Week
Next week is Children's Book Week, a yearly celebration of books and the joy of reading. Our BPS celebrations will happen on Wednesday 21st August with TWO special events.
Costume Parade
Students are encouraged to come to school dressed up as a fictional character. We will be holding our annual Book Week costume parade from 2pm - 3pm under the COLA (where we usually have morning assembly). Parents and carers are invited to attend and watch the wonderful costumes on parade!
Book Fair
This year, we have invited Gleebooks to come and run the Book Fair. They will have lots and lots of brand new books for sale, from relevant new-releases to classic award winners. As your children grow, Book Fairs make it easy to be sure their home libraries grow with them. As a bonus, our school earns a commission on any books sold at the Book Fair, which we then use to purchase new books for our library.
The Book Fair will run all day in the Hall, opening from 8:30am and closing at 4:00pm. Parents and carers are encouraged to come with their children before and after school. Both card and cash payments will be accepted. All classes will also have a chance to come in and shop at the Book Fair during the day.
We are looking forward to a wonderful week all about books and the joy of reading. Hope to see you there!
Junior Netball
In the junior netball season, the team faced a challenging year without securing a win. Despite this, their commitment and perseverance were evident throughout the season. Every game was met with a determined effort, and the players demonstrated significant growth in their skills and teamwork. The team's resilience and dedication were commendable, and although the scoreboard didn't reflect their progress, their hard work laid a strong foundation for future success. Well done and congratulations.
State Dance Festival
Congratulations to our senior dancers who have been selected to perform at the State Dance Festival later in the term. This is an incredible achievement for our dancers to be selected for the 2nd year in a row!
Our selection is a credit to the hard work our dancers have put into learning their dance via videos and zoom with Miss Charli! It is also a wonderful acknowledgement to the choreography Miss Charli creates!
Seniors dancers, we are very proud of you and are looking forward to once again seeing you shine on stage!
SRC News
Thank you for recycling your containers and bottles. Ms Self received $24.60 at the recycling centre, which means an impressive 246 containers or bottles were collected!
The SRC is excited to collect and recycle even more, with the goal of using the funds earned to purchase games and sports equipment for students to use during lunch and recess.
The SRC has been exploring different strategies to reduce waste and address the ongoing issue of litter around the playground. Fortunately, Ms Self has purchased several handy 'Pick Up Tools' for students. To help everyone use these tools safely, the SRC is creating a video that will be shared with students.
During this week’s meeting, Aadiv (5K) had a great idea to create a catchy name for the 'Pick Up Tools' to inspire students to participate in cleaning up rubbish and caring for our school environment. If you have a creative and fun name idea, please share it with your SRC member or your class teacher.
Readers Theatre in 2L
This term we worked in small groups and wrote scripts about a book called Nian. We practised reading the scripts with our groups. Each group made props to help tell the story and to make the story more interesting and realistic for the audience. We decided to perform it. After we practised, we gave feedback to each other so that we could improve for next time.
We invited Ms Birchley to watch our performance during Week 4.
After the performance we talked about what we enjoyed. Some people liked acting in front of people, and some people overcame their fear, and became brave, proud and confident during the process. One of the best things was that we worked together to support each other.
By 2L.
* additional note by Ms Birchley: This year one of the major focuses for our professional learning time has been on reading. In addition to our focus on explicit teaching and phonics, a sustained focus across the school has been on the importance of fluency. One way to improve our fluency, and ultimately our reading and reading comprehension is through Reader’s Theatre!
