Passing of John Discusso
It is with much sadness that we advise of the passing of John Discusso. John passed away peacefully on Friday 20th June 2025 leaving behind his three children, their spouses and his seven grandchildren.
John’s Market career started with C.O.D. at Haymarket in the early 1970s when he transitioned from the family owned fruit shop to becoming a wholesale produce merchant. After a few years with C.O.D, along with the move to Flemington, John broadened his horizons in the wholesale aspect of the business and then moved on to work for Fruit Growers and Merchants (F.G.M.) and Zai Bros. He soon developed a partnership which bought out Zai Bros, eventually becoming Southern Cross Produce where he was a company director, until its sale in 2017.
Throughout his career John had established a great rapport with both aspects of the Markets, its Growers and customers. He was constantly looking for and making available to the market, produce that reflected his Italian heritage and his knowledge of produce from every perspective was unsurpassed. In the latter years of his career, he remained at Southern Cross as a consultant, then integrating some of his knowledge for almost the last two years with the Kazzi family. His tenure was complete just recently when they relocated to the old Southern Cross stand, and for him it was a feeling of being back at home, a chance to flourish in an industry that was an integral part of his life.
He will be sadly missed.
